about

Port na Bpucai / The Rolling Wave (The Humours of Trim) / The Rolling Waves (The Lonesome Jig) / Lisnagun Jig

One of my favorite sets to play!

There's a story that accompanies the first tune: there were a few folks in a little boat heading to Blasket Island off the coast of County Kerry in southwest Ireland. As they were going along, they starting hearing this absolutely beautiful and otherworldly music coming from the depths of the ocean. They listened for a while and one of them took out his fiddle and started following the contours of the melody, giving birth to this tune. He named the composition “Port na Bpucai”, which means “music of the faeries”, believing the music emanated from the fairies of the deep. Many folks speculate that it was whale song resonating up through the metal bottom of the boat.

If you listen closely, you can hear the whales calling out in the phrases of the tune. :)
